We're Still Here!

What is the mad Steffy referring to? The fact that the Large Hadron Collider, or LHC, started up last night and the Earth was not swallowed by a black hole.

Even if you barely bump the Geek-o-meter, you have probably heard about the LHC which is the largest particle accelerator ever built. It will attempt to re-create the conditions just a microsecond after the Big Bang (for those of you who believe in that sorta thing).

The mis-guided fear that this will create a black hole that will grow and eventually suck everything in around it - including the Earth - like a Hoover on overload (credit to John Scalzi for the Hoover line). Of course the fact that I am writing this post means it didn't happen.

But do not rest easy because they are not actually going to collide particles for at least a month and probably won't get to the Big Bang conditions until next year. So fill out your bucket list and get going before we're all doomed! (Dislodging cheek from tongue)
